TMJ/TMD

You don’t have to live with chronic pain

Do you suffer from frequent or chronic headaches or migraines? What about pain of the face, teeth, jaw, or neck? You may be one of millions of Americans suffering from dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint, or the jaw joint. TMJ/TMD can have serious implications for your health and overall quality of life. Thankfully, at Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry, we can treat your TMJ dysfunction with a simple mouth guard.

TMJ/TMD explained

TMJ stands for “temporomandibular joint”. TMD stands for “temporomandibular joint dysfunction”. Both acronyms are used to describe any dysfunction of the jaw joint (TMJD is also sometimes used). For simplicity’s sake, we’ll use TMJ here. TMJ is largely brought on by stress, but can also be caused by other factors like bite misalignment or traumatic injury. TMJ is characterized by:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Jaw popping, locking, or clicking
  • Jaw pain
  • Chronic headache/migraine
  • Myofascial pain – persistent pain of the face, teeth, jaw, head, or neck

Treatment

If you’ve been living in chronic pain without relief, we would love to speak with you about TMJ treatment at Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry. We can fit you with a custom oral appliance that you wear during sleep to minimize the effects of teeth grinding and clenching, and prevent the jaw joint from contracting, thus easing the tension and relieving your pain. Our TMJ patients are thrilled with their results and the transformation TMJ treatment has had on their quality of life.
